MOEILIJKHEDEN, WAARMEDE COLUMBUS IN ZIJN JONGE JAREN HAD TE KAMPEN.

In de prachtige zeestad Genua, de trotsche bijgenaamd, werd omstreeks het jaar 1435 een knaapje geboren, dat nu in alle landen als Christophorus Columbus bekend is. Het juiste jaar zijner geboorte kent men niet. Hij was de zoon van geringe lieden, en zijn vader, die een degelijk en vlijtig man, en wolkammer van beroep was, moest hard werken, om in het onderhoud van zijn gezin te voorzien.

De haven van Genua lag vol met schepen uit al de handelshavens van de toen bekende wereld. Op de kaden wemelde het van zeelieden, die allerlei talen spraken en de uiteenloopendste kleederdrachten vertoonden. De knaap was van nature nadenkend en bezat, bij een groote liefde voor avonturen, een levendige verbeelding.
