ADVERTENCIA DEL EDITOR.

El viage que en 1745 emprendieron por órden de la Corte de España los PP. Quiroga y Cardiel de la Compañía de Jesus, no tuvo mas objeto, que señalar un punto favorable al establecimiento de una poblacion. El que parecia mas indicado era la bahia de San Julian, y fué precisamente el que se reconoció menos propio para fomentarla: tierra estéril, pobre de caza, de combustibles, y hasta de agua potable. Los mismos indios se retraian de habitarla y solo la visitaban para hacer sus provisiones de sal, que es lo único de que abunda.

Estos Jesuitas notaron muchos errores en la descripcion que hizo Anson de aquellos parages, y negaron que desaguase en la bahia un gran rio, de que hacia mencion este viagero. Hasta en la latitud hallaron inexactos sus cálculos, cuya rectificacion prevaleció en los nuevos derroteros.
