Om een goed begin te maken en met een vrij hart naar Meta's bruiloft te kunnen gaan, mogen wij eerst nog wel eens een praatje over de familie March houden. En dan moet ik al dadelijk zeggen, dat wanneer, sommige mijner oudere lezeressen mochten pruttelen: "Er wordt te veel over 'liefdesgeschiedenissen' in dat verhaal gesproken," (ik ben niet bang, dat jonge menschen dit bezwaar zullen maken), ik hun slechts antwoorden kan met de woorden van mevrouw March: "Wat kan men anders verwachten, met vier vroolijke jonge meisjes in huis en een levenslustigen jongen buurman vlak naast de deur!"
