Pendant que les scènes que nous venons de décrire se passaient dans divers points du château, la juive Rébecca attendait, dans une tour éloignée, le sort qu'on lui destinait. Elle y avait été conduite par deux de ses ravisseurs déguisés, et qui la firent entrer précipitamment dans une petite chambre, où elle se trouva en présence d'une vieille sibylle qui grommelait un air saxon, comme pour accompagner les révolutions de son fuseau sur le plancher. Elle leva la tête en voyant Rébecca, et jeta sur la belle juive ce regard de malignité et d'envie que la vieillesse et la laideur, lorsqu'elles se joignent à des dispositions malfaisantes, ont coutume de jeter sur la jeunesse et la beauté.
