L' Histoire de Sibylle , qui a paru naguère dans la Revue des Deux Mondes , où je viens moi même de publier Mademoiselle La Quintinie , est un sujet assez beau pour tenter plus d'un écrivain. La critique impartiale a reconnu, en dehors du mérite de la forme, l'importance et la grandeur de la pensée du livre. Elle devait certes des félicitations à l'auteur pour le courage qu'il a eu de traiter, sous cette forme du roman, la question si grave et si peu romanesque de la croyance religieuse.
