L'autore di questi due racconti fu uomo che ebbe lagrime e dolori molti; gioje pochissime; rari sorrisi e fugaci. Nondimeno talvolta fu piacevole, e in queste pagine si è ingegnato di farvi ridere.

Vi è egli riuscito? Forse non ha fatto che ripetere in altra cadenza, con altro ritmo quell'inno di dolore che proruppe così spontaneo e così gagliardo dal suo petto. Forse la sua maschera è sdruscita e sotto il riso del gioviale s'indovina il gemito d'uno che soffre.

Usategli venia, e siategli grati dell'intenzione. Pensate che egli dorme alcune braccia sotterra, e che non raggiunse il ventinovesimo anno.

Questi due racconti, dei primissimi che segnarono la sua carriera letteraria non hanno i pregi d'altri lavori che nacquero più tardi. Sono ad ogni modo dilettevoli. La forma è facile e spontanea; la tela bizzarra ed immaginosa.

La lettura d'essi non farà male a nessuno; potrà far bene a coloro che vogliano conoscere come gl'ingegni sventurati sappiano ridere.
