"Dag vent, zus is buiten in den tuin," antwoordt moeder, terwijl zij zijn lief jongenshoofd streelt en zijn kus weerom geeft. Weg is hij de tuindeur door de plaats over, zoo gauw zijn dikke beenen hem dragen kunnen. Daar zit zus op het grasveld bij de gymnastiekpalen. Op een doek staat de box en zus kruipt er in rond. Lijsje ligt in een hoek, haar wangen zijn afgeschrabd, een neus heeft ze al lang niet meer het paardje van Tony, dat twee wieltjes mist en overal kale plekken heeft, staat er ook bij en hier en daar liggen kegels verspreid.
