With Wolseley to Kumasi A Tale of the First Ashanti War   By: (1872-)

Book cover

With Wolseley to Kumasi is a captivating tale of bravery, adventure, and conquest set against the backdrop of the First Ashanti War. In this historical fiction by Frederick S. Brereton, readers are transported to the heart of Africa as they follow the journey of Lieutenant Frank Haldane and his fellow soldiers as they embark on a perilous mission.

The story begins with the British expeditionary force led by General Sir Garnet Wolseley, as they venture deep into Ashanti territory in an attempt to crush the powerful and formidable Ashanti Empire. Lieutenant Haldane, a brave and resourceful young officer, finds himself at the forefront of this treacherous campaign, facing not only the physical challenges of the African terrain but also the cunning tactics and fierce resistance of the Ashanti warriors.

Brereton masterfully weaves together elements of history, adventure, and personal growth as we witness Haldane's transformation from a naive officer to a seasoned and respected leader. Through vivid descriptions and meticulous attention to detail, the author brings the African landscape to life, immersing readers in the sights, sounds, and smells of the jungle, while also illuminating the internal struggles faced by both the British forces and the Ashanti people.

One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its portrayal of the complex relationship between the British invaders and the Ashanti people. Brereton delves into the cultural differences and misunderstandings, leading to clashes and violence, but also highlights moments of mutual admiration and understanding. This nuanced exploration adds depth and authenticity to the narrative, making it much more than a simple war story.

With Wolseley to Kumasi is not solely focused on the military aspect of the conflict, but also delves into the personal journeys of the characters. Haldane's growth as a leader is beautifully portrayed, and readers will find themselves emotionally invested in his triumphs and setbacks. The supporting characters, such as the brave and resilient African allies the British encounter, also contribute to the richness of the storytelling.

Reader be warned, however, that the book does have its flaws. The pacing can be uneven at times, with certain sections feeling rushed while others are more slow-paced. Additionally, some may find the descriptive passages overly detailed, though this does add to the authenticity of the setting.

Overall, With Wolseley to Kumasi is a thrilling historical adventure that transports readers to a tumultuous period in African history. Brereton's vivid writing style, well-researched historical backdrop, and memorable characters make this a captivating read for fans of both historical fiction and military adventures.

CHAPTER ONE.

GREAT MISFORTUNE.

Dick Stapleton tossed restlessly on his bamboo bed, till the rickety legs creaked ominously and the mosquito net waved to and fro, threatening to descend upon his head. The heat was stifling. Inside his room the thermometer stood at an unusual height, even for this Gold Coast country, where high readings are a common occurrence, and where hot nights are the rule rather than the exception. The windows of the house in which he slept, or vainly attempted to do so, were thrown wide open, but despite that fact, they admitted nothing but the deep and ever recurring boom of the surf, which beats upon the sandy beach of the Fanti country without ceasing. Boom! Boom! The thunder of the waves seemed to shake even the land, while in his mind's eye Dick could see the spray rise high, and then fall back as white as milk, seething and foaming, to be swallowed by the next breaker as it curled its green crest on to the sand. Not a breath stirred on this sultry night. The leaves on the forest trees within a stone's throw of the house made no movement... Continue reading book >>
