A Study in Scarlet

A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
By: (1859-1930)

A Study in Scarlet is a detective mystery novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, introducing his new character of Sherlock Holmes, who later became one of the most famous literary detective characters. He wrote the story in 1886, and it was published the next year. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes to his sidekick Doctor Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet": "There’s the scarlet thread of murder running through the colorless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it." PART I.

( Being a reprint from the reminiscences of JOHN H. WATSON, M.D., late of the Army Medical Department. ) [2]

CHAPTER I. MR. SHERLOCK HOLMES.

IN the year 1878 I took my degree of Doctor of Medicine of the University of London, and proceeded to Netley to go through the course prescribed for surgeons in the army. Having completed my studies there, I was duly attached to the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers as Assistant Surgeon. The campaign brought honours and promotion to many, but for me it had nothing but misfortune and disaster. I was removed from my brigade and attached to the Berkshires, with whom I served at the fatal battle of Maiwand... Continue reading book >>

One of the best of the Sherlock Holmes series. Ironically this is the last one I listened to and it is the first in the entire series! The narrator, has a wonderful voice and narrating style. Great tone and timber and just enough inflection to keep it interesting.

Subject: A complete surprise
The author has his geography mixed up, but the middle part of the story is amazingly accurate! I thought I'd read all of the Sherlock Holmes books/stories, but somehow I missed this one. It amazed me with its accuracy of some little-known material.

A wonderful audio edition of this classic. The reader is a bit slow, but very much like Dr. Watson.
