Madame Midas

Madame Midas by Fergus Hume
By:

Madame Midas is a captivating tale that follows the life of a young woman named Madame Midas who inherits a gold mine in Australia. With the help of her loyal employees, she successfully manages the mine and becomes extremely wealthy. However, her newfound wealth attracts the attention of unsavory characters who stop at nothing to try and swindle her out of her fortune.

The novel is well-written and filled with suspense, drama, and unexpected twists that keep readers on the edge of their seats. Fergus Hume does a fantastic job of creating a strong and independent female protagonist in Madame Midas, who defies societal expectations and proves that she is more than capable of handling her own affairs.

Overall, Madame Midas is a fantastic read that will appeal to fans of mystery, drama, and strong female characters. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an engaging and entertaining story.

Book Description:

Madame Midas is a murder mystery, In the early days of Australia, when the gold fever was at its height.

Fergus Hume was born in England, the second son of Dr James Hume. At the age of three his father emigrated with his family to Dunedin, New Zealand. He was admitted to the New Zealand bar in 1885. Shortly after graduation he left for Melbourne, Australia where he obtained a post as a barristers’ clerk. He began writing plays, but found it impossible to persuade the managers of the Melbourne theatres to accept or even read them. Hume was a capable writer of mystery stories, and may be looked upon as one of the precursors of the many writers of detective stories whose work was so popular in the twentieth century.

Any story read by Lucy is pure torture. Her voice is so dull it'll make you fall asleep, and her accent also makes it hard to understand what she is saying.

I thought the narrator was good in many ways. Her accent and pronunciation of some words caused a little confusion at times, but I found her narration very enjoyable overall. The plot is filled with many unexpected twists and turns and vivid characterizations abound!

Thank goodness for the previous review, saved me much unpleasantness. I wont listen to a single chapter read by Lucy Burgoyne let alone 13 hours worth!
