War of the Worlds (Version 3)

Book cover
By: (1866-1946)

War of the Worlds is a gripping science fiction novel that follows the Martian invasion of Earth. The story is narrated through the eyes of an unnamed protagonist who witnesses the chaos and destruction caused by the extraterrestrial beings. H. G. Wells does a fantastic job of creating a sense of fear and tension throughout the novel, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

One of the most impressive aspects of War of the Worlds is Wells' vivid descriptions of the Martian tripods and their advanced technology. The way in which the Martians effortlessly decimate everything in their path highlights the sheer power and intelligence of these alien creatures. The protagonist's constant struggle for survival adds a sense of urgency to the story, making it nearly impossible to put the book down.

Additionally, Wells' exploration of themes such as imperialism, evolution, and the fragility of human civilization adds depth to the narrative. The novel serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of unchecked expansion and the importance of humility in the face of the unknown.

Overall, War of the Worlds is a timeless classic that continues to captivate readers with its thrilling plot and thought-provoking themes. H. G. Wells' masterful storytelling and imaginative world-building make this novel a must-read for fans of science fiction and alien invasion stories.

Book Description:
No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that the Earth was being scrutinised and studied from across the gulf of space. With infinite complacency, humanity went about its little affairs, serene in its assurance of its empire over matter. It is possible that the micro-organisms we watch under a microscope, do the same. Few people gave thought to the idea of life on other planets, and none imagined that it could be so vastly superior in intellect to ourselves. No one considered the possibility of extra-terrestrial danger. Yet the eyes that regarded our planet were envious and unsympathetic, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.

Subject: Good story, excellently narrated
This is a classic SF work that will appeal to many, as it is well-paced and full of both action and poignantly thoughtful moments. It's very well-suited to be an audiobook because it has a true journalist/storyteller feel to it by the author's design. My wife and I listened to a chapter each night before bed and thoroughly enjoyed it. The narrator is nearly flawless and quite dedicated to producing an excellent version of the story that will keep you riveted from beginning to end. If you're an American like me, just ignore the extensive geographical name dropping of English geography (the book's biggest hurdle when it comes to relatability) and enjoy the ride!

Reader dose a nice job. Such a freaking' awesome book, too! Side note: the .m4b format is read by someone completely different; I do not recommend that version. Also, the mp3 files don't line up too well once imported to iTunes then to the iPod. Had to create a playlist.
