歌人、石川啄木が書いた小説。新聞記者だった自身の体験も反映しているように思われる東京の新聞社の社会部の一団が登場する。主人公は、亀山、肺病になって結局、退社してしまう画工の松永、その松永の面倒をよく見た高橋などが登場する。
