Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
By: (1818-1848)

Emily Brontë’s only novel, published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and many around them.

Now considered a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights met with mixed reviews by critics when it first appeared, with many horrified by the stark depictions of mental and physical cruelty. Though Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre was originally considered the best of the Brontë sisters’ works, many subsequent critics of Wuthering Heights argued that its originality and achievement made it superior.

First Page:

1801. I have just returned from a visit to my landlord the solitary neighbour that I shall be troubled with. This is certainly a beautiful country! In all England, I do not believe that I could have fixed on a situation so completely removed from the stir of society. A perfect misanthropist's heaven: and Mr. Heathcliff and I are such a suitable pair to divide the desolation between us. A capital fellow! He little imagined how my heart warmed towards him when I beheld his black eyes withdraw so suspiciously under their brows, as I rode up, and when his fingers sheltered themselves, with a jealous resolution, still further in his waistcoat, as I announced my name.

'Mr. Heathcliff?' I said.

A nod was the answer.

'Mr. Lockwood, your new tenant, sir. I do myself the honour of calling as soon as possible after my arrival, to express the hope that I have not inconvenienced you by my perseverance in soliciting the occupation of Thrushcross Grange: I heard yesterday you had had some thoughts '

'Thrushcross Grange is my own, sir,' he interrupted, wincing... Continue reading book >>

What amazing narration. Ruth Golding changes her voice with such ease from one character to another and with so much emotion. A thought provoking novel between love and hate, vengence and forgiveness.

I've never read the book before, so I looked up Joseph's parts... couldn't understand a word of it without this recording! Well done!

Subject: Joseph's dialogue is perfect!
If you look up Joseph's dialogue in the book, it's barely readable. Ruth Golding does a brilliant job interpreting his jargon.

Ruth Golding is amazing, such great voices and emotion. My only caveat was related to Joseph's voice, as I did find his words a little too difficult to understand. On the whole, an amazing job.

Ruth Golding is an outstanding reader, obviously a trained voice actor...wish there were more such outstanding voice readers. My only gripe with her reading is the interpretation of Cathy's voice and character; she makes her sound rather silly and idiotic, almost like one of the screeching women on Monty Python's Flying Circus. I've always thought of Cathy as having a bit more gravitas. As for Joseph, his speech is rendered in the book as a kind of dialect, and it's meant to be difficult to understand to modern readers I suppose. All in all, this is possibly the best recording I have managed to find. As good as anything you would pay for.
