Mardi: and A Voyage Thither   By: (1819-1891)

Book cover

Mardi: and A Voyage Thither is a complex and thought-provoking novel that follows the journey of a young American sailor named Taji as he embarks on an epic voyage through the mysterious and exotic islands of the South Pacific. Herman Melville's vivid descriptions of the lush landscapes and vibrant cultures of the islands create a rich and immersive reading experience.

The novel delves deep into philosophical and existential themes, exploring the nature of truth, identity, and the meaning of life. Melville's prose is poetic and introspective, and his exploration of the human psyche is both profound and unsettling.

While some readers may find the novel's dense symbolism and philosophical musings challenging, those who persevere will be rewarded with a profound and thought-provoking read that will stay with them long after they have turned the final page. Mardi: and A Voyage Thither is a true literary masterpiece that deserves a place on the bookshelf of any serious reader.

PREFACE

Not long ago, having published two narratives of voyages in the Pacific, which, in many quarters, were received with incredulity, the thought occurred to me, of indeed writing a romance of Polynesian adventure, and publishing it as such; to see whether, the fiction might not, possibly, be received for a verity: in some degree the reverse of my previous experience.

This thought was the germ of others, which have resulted in Mardi. New York, January, 1849.

MARDI.
